 Last night we watched Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. I'd put off watching it from the time it came out because I've not ever been a big fan of Mel. He's always seemed a little off to me. I also don't get into blood and gore so much. After seeing the movie, all I can say is "Wow".
This movie is so shocking I don't even know where to begin. Let me start by saying this: If you have not watched this movie because you are not a Christian and/or you don't believe in Jesus, please don't let that stop you. It's a pretty well known historical fact that this man Jesus did live. Even if you don't believe he was the son of God. It is also very will established in non-Christian writings what happened to this man. He was beaten beyond all recognition and then crucified. Watch it as a historical movie about how we as human beings can be so cruel.
I honestly have to say, I would not let children watch this movie. I wouldn't even let many teens watch it, depending on their maturity level. The level of violence performed in those times is appauling! For Christians, this movie will bring tears to your eyes. You've read the verses in the Bible a hundred times, read them as children, and heard the teachings. Then you realize, the vision you had in your head of a couple whips to the back, a punch in the face, and a a couple nails in the hands are much more. The Bible says Jesus was beaten to an almost uncrecognizable state: Isaiah 52:14 declares, “Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness.” This man suffered. He was already on the brink of death before he was ever placed on the cross. It brings a whole new meaning to the story.
After watching this movie I was almost unable to speak. I just sat there thinking... "Would you take his place? Would you have endured all the he endured if you knew it would save the lost?" There is a Christian song on the radio about taking the nails from his the hands and I realized... It was so much more than that. I'd be willing to bet the nails were the easy part. |
